Dolphin Introduction! Dolphin is an IRC client, written in Java. It probably has numerous of bugs, so don't expect it to work fine all the time. If you have any comments or suggestions or want to report bugs, you can send me an e-mail at nonsens@dds.nl. How do I fire it up? For starters...you must be able to run Java-applets. You can't use a browser like Netscape Navigator, or Microsoft Internet Explorer, because they have some sort of internal protection against network stuff. As far as I know, the only way you can start this baby up, is to do it with the Java Developers Kit, or run JavaOS. If you have the Java Developers Kit, you can start Dolphin up by typing "java Dolphin". This should work, unless you haven't set your CLASSPATH environment, or don't have a path pointing to where-ever your JDK-binaries are. How do I connect to an IRC server? After you have started up Dolphin, and you have the Dolphin serverwindow on your screen, you should fill in your favorite server where it says "Server:", and you're nickname where it says "Nickname:". After you have done this, you should press the button in the top-left, where it says "Connect". After you have pressed it, you should see a lot of text scrolling in the serverwindow. When that's finished, you can join a channel, where it says "Channel:", by typing a channelname. If you are new to IRC, you might want to type "#ircnewbies", where it says "Channel:", and hit enter. I can (most times) be found on the channels #house, and #digistad, with the nickname "Pino666". Does Dolphin have some implemented commands? Sure it does. Dolphin has a basic set of commands. Not all of them though, but they will come (send me a list of commands that are missing, or that you would like to see implemented). The implemented commands at this time are: /me /whois /msg /kick /mode /ctcp /topic /list /kill /nick /quit /invite /notice /who /join /part /oper As I said, there are more to come, and you will be able to make them yourself (aliases), but this will be possible in a future release. Anything else I need to know? Well...I have resolved a few problems, which occured in the previous (0.1a) version, but there are some bugs and problems, which I haven't resolved yet. You can still join only one channel at a time, talk to one person at a time (unless you use /msg), and can only have one DCC Chat window active. I hope this will be fixed in the next version. In the serverwindow...if you type a line which starts with a slash (/), Dolphin will think it is a command. Anything else type in the serverwindow-commandline, Dolphin will send it directly to the server (RAW commands). Your loginname will be the same as your nickname, unless you run an identd server. All loginnames will be converted to lowercase, so if your nickname is 'Dolphin', your loginname will become 'dolphin'. Still no scripts. The "Setup", "DCC Chat" and "DCC Send" buttons don't work. These will be used in the future. You can however receive DCC Chat's, but you can't send them (I seem to have some problem converting addresses 127.0.0.1 => 2130706433). If you try to resize the window, the widgets will change from their original place. - Maurice Nonnekes -
